Do I register my child in the PreCan or CanSkate Program?
Pre-School CanSkate (PreCan) is best for skaters between the ages of 3-5 years old. PreCan is taught on half the ice surface and is only a 30-minute class. This is to ensure that these little skaters leave the ice enjoying learning to skate, a 45-minute class can sometimes be too long for these beginners
Skaters are grouped according to their skill level and may move groups as they master skills. Skaters must be a minimum of 5 years of age to register in the CanSkate program, unless the coach has approved registration based on passing the PreCan class.
What will you learn?
A complete series of balance, control and agility skills taught in six stages of learning that pertain to hockey, ringette, speed skating and figure skating as well as general recreational skating. CanSkate uses nationally tested and proven curriculum and delivery methods that guarantee skater success in developing stronger basic skills and developing them faster.
What can you expect?
Action, movement and fun! Lessons are given in a group format with a coach/PA -to-student ratio of a maximum 1:10. Skaters progress at their own rate and coaches make sessions active using teaching aids, upbeat music and a wide variety of activities that create a motivational environment and promote learning. Badges, ribbons and other incentives are used to benchmark skaters’ progress and reward effort and participation.
The CanSkate program consists of 6 different stages. In these stages are 3 different areas (Agility, Balance and Control). Skaters will receive a ribbon for each area they complete and a badge once all 3 areas have been completed.

Helmet Policy
In following Skate Canada's guidelines, all skaters are required to wear a CSA approved helmet until they have completed the Stage 5 CanSkate badges.
What do you need to participate?
All you need are skates, a CSA-approved helmet, warm pants, mittens or gloves, and a warm sweater or jacket. It's best to dress in layers – it will get warm!
All programs are subject to an annual Skate Canada membership fee of $61.65. Membership is valid from September 1st to August 31st.
